Hague scorns stealth taxes

Conservative leader William Hague scorned tax cuts announced in Chancellor Gordon Brown&#39s budget, saying all the cuts he made would cost the Government no more than a 1 per cent cut in the base rate of income tax.

Hague said the tax cuts were a pre-election giveaway and added increases in indirect taxation, which he described as stealth taxes, meant the Chancellor was like a thief who stole your car and returned the hubcap the next day.

Hague said: “You can&#39t fool all of the people all of the time, but you can fool Labour MPs on budget day.”
