Greengross made patron of disabled workers campaign

The Unum Provident-sponsored New Beginnings campaign, which aims to get 250,000 disabled people back to work by 2010, has appointed Baroness Greengross as its patron.

The aim is to improve return-to-work incomes for one-quarter of the UK&#39s disabled people.

The campaign is supported by the CB1, the Disability Rights Commission and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Greengross is vice-chairwoman of the Britain in Eur-ope Campaign and a board member of Help Age International. She was director general of Age Concern England from 1987 to 2000.

The campaign aims to draw together expertise and resources from the public, private and voluntary sectors to develop integrated thinking and approaches to disability issues.

UnumProvident director of corporate services Joanne Hindle says: “It is vital to recognise that the benefit system has to encourage disabled people back into work.

“We are already discussing these issues with the Government and are looking forward to engaging in a constructive partnership to deliver our shared aspirations.”

Greengross says: “I believe passionately that New Beginnings is a campaign that must succeed. We all know people with disabilities who would be a real asset to companies and organisations across the country but who find themselves prevented from taking up positions due to prejudice, lack of understanding or simply fear.”
