Gale to be COO at Just Retirement

Just Retirement has appointed ex-Sesame chief executive Patrick Gale as chief operating officer.

He will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations as well as running its marketing, distribution and information technology functions.

Gale left Sesame in December after helping with the sale and transition of the company from Misys to Friends Provident. Before joining Sesame in 2000, he was a director of Misys’ banking division.

He has been a non-executive director at HBOS Financial Services since January and will continue in this role. Gale says: “Just Retirement has an excellent track record of delivering for IFAs and its two big product areas, annuities and equity release, have growth potential.”

Just Retirement chief executive Mike Fuller says: “Given the importance of distribution and technology to our future success, Patrick’s experience at Sesame is particularly relevant to our business. His involvement will allow the board to devote more time to the strategic development of the group’s business to take advantage of the substantial market and product opportunities.”

Dampier slams Skandia change of ideas

Hargreaves Lansdown head of research Mark Dampier has rounded on Skandia Investment Management following its decision to replace Aberdeen’s Hugh Young on its global best ideas fund.

Anchors aweigh

This year’s PIMS conference was a strange mixture of optimism and pessimism. Overall, IFAs are happy with what is happening in regulation. There may even be signs that the top-enders – chartered and certified planners – are coming round to the idea of RDR Mark II. They did, of course, approve of RDR mark one but one planner on board the Arcadia last week said they had decided, on reflection, that the first version was too harsh and would have driven too many advisers – and not necessarily the bad apples – from the industry.
