Gadget of the fortnight: voice recognition

Both Apple iOS and Android offer great support for voice recognition. 

I have said before how easy it is to dictate and proof text using an iPhone or iPad. The challenge is remembering to use this facility as often as possible and a great way to get into this habit is by using the Google Search app. 

Instead of typing your search into Google, you press the microphone button and say “OK Google” followed by what you want to search for. The results are presented in the normal way although for some things Google also reads out the responses.

In the US, Google is running a major advertising campaign with the message that the Search app is so helpful and easy to use, it should be “dockable”. Voice recognition is now so accurate it can achieve huge time savings and doing your searches like this is a great way to start using the technology, rather than typing.
