FTSE passes 5,500

The FTSE 100 has risen past 5,500 amid hopes that a meeting of European leaders this weekend could finally see a solution found to the eurozone crisis.

At 10.40am,the blue-chip index stood at 5510.95, a rise of 0.8 per cent.

Markets are also up across Europe with the German Dax and the French Cac 40 up 1.4 and 1 per cent respectively, while in Asia, the Nikkei 225 in Japan rose 1.5 per cent and the Hong Kong Hang Seng was up over 2 per cent.
