FTSE falls below 5,000 after weak US job data

The FTSE 100 has fallen below the 5,000 barrier after US unemployment data released this afternoon was worse than expected.

By 1.58pm, the blue-chip index fell to an intraday low of 4,957 after it was announced that US unemployment had hit 9.6 per cent.

Banks were hit hard with Royal Bank of Scotland falling 6.6 per cent to 47.23p, Lloyds Banking Group down 5.1 per cent to 94.17p and Barclays down 2.2 per cent 355p.
