FSA leaflet promotes advice on tax-efficient donations

The FSA is planning to sponsor the Giving Campaign&#39s initiative to encourage tax-effective charitable donations.

The charity believes the regulator&#39s backing will encourage more advisers to offer information to their clients on making tax-free donations.

The FSA is sending a Making Gifts Go Further leaflet to all regulated adviser firms. It details the main methods of tax-free giving to charity to enable financial professionals to advise their clients on charitable donations.

According to the charity&#39s research, 57 per cent of advisers and nearly half the stock-brokers surveyed never or hardly ever give any such advice.

FSA head of industry training and business ethics adviser David Jackman says: “Many people make regular donations to charity but only a small proportion do so tax-effectively. Providing advice on tax-effective giving creates an opportunity for financial advisers to strengthen their relationship with clients by helping them to make the best of their giving.”

Giving Campaign director Amanda Delew says: “Tax-effective giving is important as it is an added incentive for an individual to give to charity and enables charities to make the most of each donation they receive. We would love to see financial professionals offering advice on tax-effective giving to their clients.”
