Friends Life has appointed the chief executive its international arm John Van Der Wielen as chief executive of the insurer’s UK and international divisions.

Van Der Wielen will replace UK chief executive David Hynam who has decided to leave the business just seven months after he was appointed to the UK chief executive role as part of a reshuffle last November.

Former Clerical Medical chief executive Van Der Wielen joined Friends Life in November 2011. He will report to group chief executive Andy Briggs.

James Tan has been appointed managing director of Friends Provident International, based in Hong Kong.

Friends Life group chief executive Andy Briggs says: ”I am pleased to announce the appointment of John Van Der Wielen as chief executive of our UK and international divisions.  He has extensive financial services experience and I am confident he will provide excellent leadership to drive the organic growth of our UK business, which is a key component of a strong and sustainable Friends Life group.

”The strategy remains unchanged for our UK and international divisions and they will continue to operate separately. I would also like to thank David Hynam for his contribution in establishing our UK division and wish him well for the future.”
