Former Tory minister Gummer to chair Aifa

Former Conservative Party chairman John Gummer MP is to replace Lord Hunt of Wirral as Aifa chairman.

Gummer will take up the post on January 1 when Lord Hunt steps down from the role that he has held since the trade body was launched in September 1999.

Gummer says he is particularly concerned with the impact of the EU on the industry and hopes to ensure that developments at a European level do not burden the sector.

He was a Cabinet minister for 16 years under Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

Gummer served as minister for agriculture, fisheries and food from 1989-93 before becoming Environment Secretary from 1993-97.

After leaving ministerial office, he was appointed chairman of the International Commission on Sustainable Consumption. He is currently chairman of corporate social responsibility solutions company The Sancroft Group, a non-executive director of fire and safety product firm Kidde and chairman of waste compliance firm Valpak.

Gummer says: “I am delighted to have been invited to become Aifa chairman. I am particularly pleased to be involved with an association which represents the smaller financial institution. I firmly believe that these businesses need support and assistance if they are not to be overwhelmed by the demands of the authorities.”

Lord Hunt says: “I am sorry to be leaving Aifa after three years of great challenge and much achievement. But I cannot think of anyone with better credentials to take the association to the next stage of its development than John.

“It is important that the Aifa chairman works for the sector as a whole and promotes the value of independent financial advice. John is exactly the right man to do this.”
