Former Origen chief Gareth Marr retires after 30-year advice career

The Red House director and former Origen chief executive Gareth Marr has retired after 30 years in the adviser market.

Marr is stepping down after a 10-year battle with throat cancer and will become a non-executive director of financial planning firm The Red House, which he founded in 2007. Co-founder Ruth Sturkey becomes managing director.

He has a host of famous clients including Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, singers Peter Gabriel and Sting.

The 62 year old founded Marr & Bradley in 1984 and has held a number of chief executive posts including Moores Marr Bradley, Advisory and Brokerage Services and Origen.

Marr was deputy chairman of City regulator Fimbra and chairman of the Association of Pensioneer Trustees, now Amps.

Marr says: “It has been a privilege to work with so many great colleagues especially when creating new businesses that had at their heart a consistent theme of caring for clients.

“Of all the businesses I have been involved in, I am most proud of The Red House and the legacy that I leave behind in the very capable hands of Ruth and the rest of the team.”

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason says: “Gareth has been one of the really good professionals I have had on my side over the years, and in the dangerous waters of the entertainment industry that has been a real benefit. I wish him well in all his future endeavours.”

Informed Choice executive director Nick Bamford says: “Gareth is a great character and he is going into a well deserved retirement. Experience and longevity is not easily replaced in financial services but he has clearly influenced a lot of people.”
