Ex-Savills fund chief setting up property portfolio firm

Former FPD Savills head of fund management James Thornton is setting up a commercial property investment company for private clients who have more than £100,000 to invest.

Mayfair Capital Partners, which was co-founded by Guy Brogden, a former senior equity partner at niche property company Oliver Liggins, will enable wealthy private clients to gain exposure to the commercial property sector through managed funds.

Its aim is to provide a high-quality, balanced portfolio approach to investing in commercial property and strategic advice to onshore and offshore investors and clients investing in Sipps, Ssass, charities and private investment companies.

Mayfair says the characteristics of the UK commercial property sector, which it claims is now worth around £200bn, make it particularly attractive for high-net-worth clients.

It points out that over the past five years, commercial property has given average annual returns of 12.6 per cent compared with gilt returns of 9.3 per cent and equities of 6.9 per cent.

Thornton says: “We believe sophisticated private investors are increasingly keen to invest in the UK commercial property sector and our research confirms that there is a genuine demand for help in this area.”
