Columbia Threadneedle Investments has hired former Neptune UK equities manager Jeremy Smith as its new head of UK equity research.

Smith used to run the UK equity fund at Neptune, but left the firm in 2010. Prior to that he was director of the large cap equities team at Schroders. Since then he has worked on the sell side for Liberum and Espirito Santo Investment Bank.

In the newly-created role at Columbia Threadneedle, Smith will lead the UK research team and expand the research capabilities in the team.

“Active management and insight are a key part of our ability to deliver successful outcomes for our clients and Jeremy’s strong track record and extensive experience will further enhance our client proposition,” says Leigh Harrison, head of equities for Europe.

Harrison says the hire will help to expand the UK equity team, which has been growing this year.

“We have been experiencing great success across the product range; with our UK and European funds AUM at record highs this year and the UK Absolute Alpha Fund reaching £500m this month,” he adds.

Columbia Threadneedle also hired Phil Macartney and Sonal Sagar as analysts in the UK equities team earlier this year.
