Deptford joins Smith & Williamson

Smith & Williamson has recruited Charles Deptford, who was previously the manager of New Stars Equity Income fund.

He will lead manage Smith & Williamsons UK Equity Growth and UK Special Situations trusts and assist Rupert Fleming on the Enterprise fund, a UK long/short offshore vehicle, after joining on June 3.

The two Smith & Williamson funds were previously managed by Mark Boucher and Rupert Fleming. Boucher resigned earlier this year and left Smith & Williamson on Friday.

Deptford left New Star when it merged with Henderson in April. Graham Kitchen, the head of UK equity at Henderson, and Andrew Jones, UK equity manager, took over the Equity Income fund, which had underperformed its sector in 2008.

Deptford has 20 years experience in fund management and has worked as head of UK equities at Rothschild Asset Management and manager of Barings Equity Income and Equity Growth funds.
