Defaqto is reviewing its critical-illness scoring system to focus on the quality of products offered rather than the number of illnesses they cover.
Life and protection principal consultant Ben Heffer says the rating firm is working with the industry to make the Aequos database more qualitative than quantitative. He says the move comes in response to the dramatic increase in the number of conditions covered by policies.
Heffer says: “We need to differentiate between those covers that are vital and those that are nice to have but may already be covered under another definition or may be so tightly defined that people are unlikely to be able to make a claim.”
Association of British Insurers assistant director of health and protection Nick Kirwan adds: “What I would like to see come out of this is that the additional points in the scoring system reflect the true value of the cover.”
