Darling urges bankers to show restraint

Chancellor Alistair Darling yesterday urged bankers to show some restraint by curbing their bonuses.

Speaking at a Treasury select committee evidence session on the pre-Budget report yesterday, Darling said they should demonstrate they “live on the same planet as the rest of us”, according to the Financial Times.

He said: “I say to the bankers…if you want to get off the front pages, for goodness’ sake show some of the restraint the public want you to.”

Darling re-emphasised that the reason for bringing in the levy was to change the behaviour of banks and not to raise revenue.

Yesterday France confirmed it would be following the UK by imposing a one-off 50 per cent tax on bank bonuses above £24,500.

We would also like the government, all MPs and the FSA to do the same. If any of them were to demonstrate that they lived in the real world the world would be a better place & more peo[le might be prepared to listen to them.

  2. Pots & Kettles ! I absolutely agree that the first move is for Politicians, MPs and Peers, to demonstrate that THEY are on the same planet as the rest of us.
Only then am I prepared to accept that they are working for US rather than merely self serving blame shifters.
