Dampier reclaims pundit top spot

Hargreaves Lansdown head of research Mark Dampier has regained top spot in the PressWatch pundits table for September.

David Hollingworth, of London & Country Mortgages, came a close second, with 28 mentions during the month, only one fewer than Dampier, while Chartwell Investment Management associate director Patrick Connolly took third place with 25 mentions.

Dampier&#39s colleagues at HL, Tom McPhail and Ben Yearsley, came in at fourth and 13th respectively, helping the Bristol-based IFA to achieve first place in the table of companies with most pundit mentions overall.

The firm received 66 mentions, almost twice as many as second-placed Chartwell, which managed 37, while London & Country Mortgages came third with 36 mentions.

Continuing interest in the endowment crisis meant Norwich Union topped the table for most frequent quotes from any one company.

However, the most cited individual spokesperson was Prudential UK and Europe chief executive Mark Wood, who clocked up 11 mentions, followed by Michael Barnard of Artemis with seven.

In the overall rankings for press coverage for September, Nationwide Building Society came out on top, raising its score to 421 from 337 last month. Of 118 articles on the UK&#39s biggest building society, only four were negative.

Presswatch sales director Tim Crane says “Not since October 2001 has Mark Dampier topped the PressWatch charts. However, such is the consistency of the man that he is strongly fancied to walk off with this year&#39s most quoted pundit award. September saw Mark &#39Rising&#39 Dampier on top form in The Daily Mail, The Times, The Observer, The Independent and The Business, which was enough to secure the number one pundit accolade.”
