Correspondent&#39s week

There is a tangible air of anticipation and excitement in the SimplyBiz offices – particularly surrounding those who are lucky enough be heading off for the first SimplyBiz seminars to be held in the South.

For those of you who do not know, the SimplyBiz offices are in the heart of Huddersfield and we do not get much in the way of bright lights here so the thought of the big city – complete with colour TV, lager tops and shops that stay open all night – is almost too much for us to bear.

Eventually, the fateful day comes and with a dream in our hearts, a skip in our steps and belief in an extraordinarily attractive proposition in our brochures, we set off for the London seminar.

My enthusiasm is only slightly dimmed by the fact that I start the journey in Huddersfield in a train carriage with no heating and arrive in London with no heating and no electricity.

Well, at least I managed to avoid the dreaded leaves on the line. After the final 20 minutes of my journey – spent on a static Tube with 100 people who would seemingly all prefer to dislocate their necks than make eye contact with their fellow travellers – I had to agree with Foxes that London really does need biscuits.

The seminars in London and Bristol go off with only one slight hiccup in that the website (www.simplybiz.co.uk) seems to have momentarily turned on us and fed us the names of the London attendees for Bristol and vice versa.

Luckily, this was fairly easily remedied without too much egg on face and we are consoled by the fact that at least we did not do a Charlotte Church (“Well, it&#39s great to be here in the capital city”…while actually being in Bristol).

As SimplyBiz is such a new company, it feels fantastic to get out into the big wide world and see that people are interested to hear what we have to say.

In fact, just when I am becoming convinced that everything is running smoothly, something inevitably comes along.

Normally, the sight of our business development director hammering on my hotel bedroom door at three in the morning clad only in his Manchester United jimjams and a panicky facial expression would not be a particularly welcome one.

But the reason for the nocturnal intrusion tickled me too much to mind my beauty sleep being interrupted.

He later filled me in by explaining that he had stepped outside in Victor Meldrew mode to berate a group of beer-fuelled teenagers for daring to have fun too noisily outside his bedroom before realising, seconds after the door swung shut, that he had not taken his key card with him.

As Steve is led back to his room by the hotel manager past the marauding crowd of riotous youngsters, I wonder why I have a sudden pang of homesickness for Huddersfield, then realise it is because the expression on his face could only be described as sheepish.

Come Wednesday night,I was thrilled to be heading back to Huddersfield and, equally happy to see my car in one piece, I set off for the midnight journey home.

Forgetting that it is so late and that my girlfriend would almost certainly be asleep,I clumsily open the garage door to the piercing sound of the house alarm. Three days away from home and I am already in the bad books with my partner and neighbours.

With a dream in our hearts, a skip in our steps and belief in an extraordin-arily attractive proposition, we set off for the London seminar
