Competition Commission appoints new chief economist

The Competition Commission has appointed Dr Alison Oldale as its new chief economist.

Oldale, who has been a director at consultancy firm LECG since 2004, replaces John Davies, who left the CC last December to run the newly established competition authority in Mauritius.

Oldale will now have responsibility for overseeing the work of the economics team in merger, market and regulatory inquiries as well as presenting the economics work of the CC both within and outside the organisation.

Oldale says: “The CC has an excellent reputation for high quality economic analysis that I am very much looking forward to building on. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at LECG and have had the opportunity to work on some of the most challenging and high profile cases in Europe. It is testament to the calibre of the work that the firm undertakes that I am able to move on to this position at the Commission.”

CC chief executive David Saunders says: “I am delighted to welcome Alison to the CC and am looking forward to working with her. Her considerable private sector experience of competition economics consultancy will be of great value to us.”
