BoS scheme aims to cut teenager crime in Glasgow

Bank of Scotland is setting up a Scottish version of the Midnight League football initiative aimed at tackling crime in disadvantaged areas, following on from a similar scheme established by fellow HBOS company Birmingham Midshires.

The Midnight League was set up by Midshires in 2000 to combat crime and social exclusion in Wolverhampton by offering football training for young people between the ages of 16 and 21 from high crime areas.

BoS aims to mirror this initiative in deprived areas of Glasgow with similar schemes based around leading Glasgow sides Celtic and Rangers.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers scheme supported by Birmingham Midshires takes place between 10pm and midnight on specified nights of the week.

It has been recognised by local police and youth and community workers as a successful diversion for young people from crime, drugs and vandalism.

The group says the league has been so successful in Wolverhampton that it will now run for another three years.

Bank of Scotland director of sponsorship Sarah Mackie says: “We are delighted that the Midnight League concept is being shared across HBOS. Birmingham Midshire&#39s support of the scheme is fantastic – it is an innovative project which really does enhance the fabric of our communities. That is why the Bank of Scot-land is following its lead in Glasgow.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club community development manager Andy Morgan says: “The league has been a great adventure for the Wolves in the community team. This has been proved by the Bank of Scotland wanting to take the scheme to the streets of Scotland on the back of its success.”
