Best Doctors bidding to build UK business

US medical specialist database service Best Doctors is looking to gain a stronger foothold in the UK following the appointment of its first UK and Ireland general manager.

Former Munich Re protection new business manager Peter Mannion has taken on the role and is looking to make the UK as prominent a territory for the company as the United States and Canada.

Best Doctors offers services such as diagnosis review through specialist medical staff as well as sourcing and negotiating the cost of, and then facilitating, “optimal” medical treatment. Its services are already employed by Skandia and Bupa, but it is keen to align itself with more insurers and to provide its services earlier in the claims process.

It is also keen to provide a “stand-alone” service to IFAs so customers can access its services independently of an insurance product and has developed a hybrid private medical insurance/critical-illness product currently being sold by insurer Combined.

Mannion says: “We think that this product is affordable by just about everybody in the UK and the value for money is extremely high. We are looking to get mass-market coverage of the UK in the next five years.”
