Bennett to run flagship Gartmore fund

Gartmore has unveiled plans to pass on the management of Roger Guy’s flagship 1.5bn European select opportunities fund to John Bennett who has been appointed senior portfolio manager European equities.

Bennett, who joins from GAM, will replace current managers Roger Guy and Guillaume Rambourg on both the European select opportunities fund and Sicav Continental European when he joins in early 2010.

Bennett currently runs GAM Star Continental European equity. His appointment sees Guy and Rambourg focus on their alternative and institutional mandates. The pair currently manage three hedge funds, two European absolute-return funds and the Gartmore European investment trust.

Bennett will report to Gartmore chief investment officer Dominic Rossi.

The Gartmore European select opportunities fund is top quartile in the IMA Europe excluding UK sector over three years. It has returned 1.9 per cent in that time compared with an average loss of 7.2 per cent.

Guy says: “John is a great fund manager. He follows a blended investment process focused on large-cap stocks similar to the process Guillaume and I use. He has a wealth of experience and a successful track record which will expand and diversify our European equity capabilities.”
