Banks may appeal OFT charges case today

The banks embroiled in a court battle with the Office of Fair Trading over current account charges may launch an appeal today.

The High Court ruled in the OFT’s favour five weeks ago, agreeing that current account charges are subject to the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract regulations.

The banks and OFT are set to meet in court today for a case management meeting to lay out a timetable for the next stages and both parties are allowed to appeal against the original ruling.

The OFT is expected to ask for a new case to decide whether or not the charges are unfair, while the banks are expected to seek permission to appeal the original verdict.
