Axa Sun Life bets on Europe

Axa Sun Life has introduced the European opportunities fund.

The fund is an open ended investment company (Oeic) which can also be used as an Isa. Axa Sun Life has aimed the fund at existing investors who already have a low-risk portfolio, and who are looking to add a higher risk investment that gives a potentially higher return.

European opportunities will be actively managed by a team of 20 fund managers, led by Alia Baig, who formerly managed the Axa Sun Life European growth offshore fund. The team will seek to identify up to 40 companies all over Europe that show good growth potential for the future. There will be no geographical or sector restrictions.

By investing in Euros over a wide geographical spread, Axa Sun Life has been able to spread the degree of risk about. Although the Euro has had a turbulent life since its introduction, falling from its initial level of $1.17 to $0.82 in 2000, recent fears of a hard landing for the American economy has led to increased investment in Europe. As a result the Euro has strengthened to $0.94, making Europe more attractive to investors. However clients must be made aware that this is a high-risk fund.

According to Standard & Poor’s the Axa Sun Life European growth A fund is ranked 34 out of 90 funds, based on £1,000 invested on a bid to bid basis with net income reinvested over three years.
