Aviva boss to be next ABI chairman


The Association of British Insurers has named Aviva UK Life chief executive Andy Briggs as its next chairman.

Briggs, who is also chairman of Aviva Global Life, succeeds Axa UK group chief executive Paul Evans in the role following the completion of Evans’ two-year term.

Briggs has been deputy ABI chairman since November and is chairman of the ABI audit committee.

He joined the Aviva board in April following Aviva’s acquisition of Friends Life. He has also previously held chief executive roles at Scottish Widows’ financial services division, the general insurance business of Lloyds Banking Group, and Prudential’s retirement income arm.

Direct Line chief executive Paul Geddes will become ABI deputy chairman.

Briggs says: “The ABI plays an important role working closely with Government, regulators and others to ensure the industry promotes best practice, transparency and great value for customers.

“I look forward to working with director general Huw Evansand his team to ensure that that we continue the important work of this industry in overcoming the challenges we face and focusing on the role insurance plays in our society and everyday life.”
