Arla calls on Government to overhaul housing benefits system

The Association of Residential Letting Agents is calling on the Government to overhaul the housing benefit system to help landlords raise standards in the rental market.

Arla chairman John Crossley told housing minister Lord Falconer last week that the quality of accommodation in the lower end of the rental market will remain poor unless the Government takes steps to attract institutional investors.

He also warned the minister the work buy-to-let landlords have done to improve the respectability of the rental sector will be pointless if the Government includes shared properties in its Houses in Multiple Occupation legislation.

The legislation, already in force in Scotland, demands that private landlords install a variety of safety measures Arla claims are "wholly inappropriate" for ordinary houses and flats.
