Akbar, who joins in June, will cover Asian and emerging markets equities.
She has nine years’ investment experience and joins Fidelity from Barclays Wealth.
The appointment completes the front-line team for the firm, which suffered a number of losses last year, including the departures of Chris Ralph, Jason Collins and Simon Mungall to Resolution to set up boutique Maia Capital.
Under the management of Geraldine Stewart, who covers UK equities in multi-manager, Fidelity has recently appoin- ted Dermot Whelan and Eugene Philalithis, who will run European equities and fixed income respectively.
The team currently stands at 12, with Stewart looking to bring the total number up to 16 by the end of August.
She says: “Richard Skelt and myself have spent some time looking to build a team of this stature and, with Ayesha’s appointment, I feel we have now brought together a strong front-line offering. We will look to continue adding to our range of products, particularly on the institutional side.”
