Actuaries&#39 taskforce to probe pension issues

Actuaries are setting up a pensions provision taskforce to look at major publicpolicy issues.

The taskforce, chaired by David Lewis from the Government&#39s Actuary&#39s Department, will review five major pension areas with a view to producing a series of research papers to be published in the autumn.

Areas covered will include state pension provision, the impact of means testing and the minimum income guarantee as a disincentive to saving into a pension, non-contributory pensions, especially within the pub-lic sector, longevity and the current retirement age as well as the problems surrounding defined-contribution schemes.

The taskforce aims to raise public awareness and identify areas where further research needs to be carried out.

Institute of Actuaries president Paul Thornton says: “Pensions will give rise to a series of difficult public policy issues for the UK population over the next 20 to 30 years. This taskforce is intended to play a major role in communicating the pension impact on the lives of people in the UK.”
