The Association of British Insurers has appointed Jonathan Davis as director of investment affairs to succeed Peter Montagnon.
Montagnon left the ABI earlier this year to join the Financial Reporting Council.
Davis founded specialist website Independent Investor and has written regular investment columns for the national press including the Financial Times and Spectator magazine. He is is also the author of two books on investment.
Davis will work full-time at the ABI while continuing in his advisory role as a director of Agrifirma Services. He will step down from his non-executive director positions at Hargreaves Lansdown and Victoria Capital (UK).
Davis will join the ABI in January and will work with chairman of the investment committee Alain Dromer to develop and promote the trade body’s view on financial and economic issues.
ABI members have £1.6trn invested in assets, including control of 13.4 per cent of investments in the London stock market and £200bn in Government bonds.
Davis says: “The ABI’s investment committee has long been one of the main channels of communication between company managements and their institutional investors.
“After many years of commenting in the media on the complex and fascinating behaviour of financial markets, and being involved in both start-up and established company boards, I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue this important work under the umbrella of the ABI.”
Acting director general Maggie Craig says: “I am delighted to welcome Jonathan to the team.
“The ABI’s investment affairs team is rightly recognised as one of the leading voices for institutional investors. It operates the institutional voting information service, was a key component in developing the Financial Reporting Council’s stewardship code and is currently working on a rights issues fees inquiry.
“I would like to thank Hugh Savill for his effectiveness and dedication as acting director in overseeing this work for much of 2010.”
