A class act

I would like to add some objective comment to the letters from Philip Thomas and Tony Fisher. I used Private Label&#39s service when it was operated by the ex-TMP people from the Heswall office and I have used their service since business was transferred back to Bracknell. I can tell you that the Bracknell service is infinitely superior.

Overall, I find Private Label&#39s products and service first class.

Blair and Hague in clash over pension fund raid

Tony Blair and William Hague locked horns before the Budget over Labour taxation of dividends in pension funds. In a stormy clash in the Commons during Prime Minister&#39s Question Time, Hague attacked the Government for slashing the adv-ance corporation tax dividend relief on pension funds in 1997, a move that is worth around £5bn a […]

Gordon&#39s and tonic with a twist

If you like driving tractors, swilling whisky, having a gamble and, erm, procreating, this was the Budget for you. In what was perhaps an attempt to atone for some of these unsavoury associations, Chancellor Gordon Brown also promised that repairs to churches would attract a reduced rate of VAT. Then came his pronouncements on the […]

Apple: a stellar technology story

By Ali Unwin, head of technology sector research

Apple recently announced the highest-ever recorded quarterly net profit ($18bn), with the sale of 74.4 million iPhones helping the company deliver $74.6bn of revenue for the quarter ending December 2014. These sales were largely driven by strong demand for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Highlights included Chinese iPhone sales doubling year-on-year and unit growth of 44% in the US — supposedly a well-penetrated market. Apple ended the quarter with $178bn in cash on its balance sheet, having generated a staggering $30bn in free cash flow during the quarter.

At Neptune, we have been long-term believers in the Apple story, and continue to hold the stock in a number of our portfolios based on the company’s long-term growth prospects. This is predicated on our belief that Apple has proved thus far that it can — unusually for a consumer electronics company — maintain high margins for a sustained period of time, even as adoption of new technology slows down and competitors produce similar-specification products.
