&#39Tax rewards if you take out PMI&#39

The Conservatives will encourage people to take out private medical insurance and reward those who do through tax breaks, according to Shadow Secretary of State for Health Dr Liam Fox.

Speaking at the party&#39s annual conference in Bournemouth, Fox said that in a sensible system, people would be encouraged to go private as it takes the burden off of the NHS.

He criticised the Government for not assisting people who go private and instead using the tax system against them such as when Chancellor Gordon Brown removed incentives for over-60s using the private system.

While not providing details of how a future Conservative Government would use the tax system to reward those taking out PMI, Fox told delegates those who pay directly for medical treatment would also be recognised.

The prospect of greater cooperation with the private sector for people&#39s health needs is a long-running Conservative theme.

Two years ago at the party conference, then Shadow Chancellor Michael Portillo spoke about encouraging people to go private.

Fox said: “We will ensure on return to office that those who have used their own savings to provide for themselves or their families are helped to do so because helping them helps everyone in the NHS.”
