&#39Govt&#39s spiv ideas will not solve the pension crisis&#39

Government pension policy is in disarray, with ministers simply coming up with “spiv” ideas, according to a leading UK pension lawyer.

Pinsent Curtis Biddle partner Robin Ellison has criticised the Government&#39s inability to sort out pension policy, saying it seems incapable of coming up with a big idea to solve the situation.

The attack will come as an embarrassment to the Gov-ernment as it works on a number of long-awaited initiatives, including the Pensions Green Paper and the Inland Revenue review into taxation.

Until he joined PCB as head of strategic planning, Ellison was pensions lawyer for City law firm Eversheds and was the author of a text on UK pensions law. He sits on a number of committees aimed at tackling the pension crisis, including the CBI and the NAPF.

Ellison says: “The Govern-ment seems to be in complete disarray. I do not think they can get a handle on pensions at all. All they are doing is coming up with spiv ideas.”

Intelligent Pensions managing director Steve Patterson says: “There certainly appears to be lack of coherence and lack of joined-up thinking between the different Govern-ment departments. They are tinkering at the edges rather than dismantling the labyrinth of regulations that hinder advisers and their customers.”

A DWP spokesman says it is working on the Green Paper which will have bold and radical proposals.
