May calls for quality

Conservative Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Theresa May says advisers play a crucial role in consumer awareness of the need to save for retirement and the availability of quality IFAs must be increased.

She told the conference: “We need a pension system that rewards people who do the right thing by saving and encourages them to do so and we need to ensure people know how much they need to be saving. The role of financial advisers is hugely important in this.

“A good financial adviser is crucial to making sure as many people as possible are saving enough and get the information they need to make the right decisions for their future. We need to extend the availability of good quality financial advice.”

May reiterated Tory plans to provide early access to pension funds, end the obligation to annuitise at 75, bring forward voluntary auto-enrolment in personal accounts ahead of 2012 and consider alternatives to defined-benefit schemes.
