Darling to admit recession worse than feared

The Chancellor Alistair Darling is expected to reveal in his pre-Budget speech that the economy has contracted 4.75 per cent in 2009.

The revised figure compares to the 3.5 per cent contraction Darling predicted for 2009 in the Budget earlier this year.

Darling is also expected to signal that the recovery has now begun, with growth in the last quarter of this year and to forecast between 1 and 1.5 per cent growth for 2010.
