Barclays leads league as Lloyds is hit by GI and protection problems
Barclays had the most complaints of all banks in the first half of this year, with 251,563 new complaints.
The FSA’s complaint data shows Lloyds is second with 181,907, followed by Santander with 168,888 and NatWest with 147,109.
Barclays upheld 53 per cent of complaints while Lloyds upheld 58 per cent, Santander 49 per cent and NatWest 69 per cent.
The majority of Barclays’ complaints, 162,611, were related to banking activities, such as current and savings accounts. It had 73,692 complaints about general insurance and protection, 8,894 complaints about mortgages, 3,910 investment complaints and 2,456 life and pensions complaints.
Most of the complaints to Santander and NatWest also concerned general banking services, with 96,205 and 139,386 complaints respectively, but the bulk of Lloyds’ complaints related to general insurance and protection with 111,897.
The total number of complaints about all financial services firms increased by 3 per cent, from 1.8 million to 1.85 million. The complaint data includes firms that report 500 or more complaints in a six-monthly reporting period.
Sesame, which is the only IFA network included in the list, received 958 complaints during the first half of the year. It upheld 23 per cent.
Emba group sales and marketing director Mike Fitzgerald says: “When you have millions of clients, you are going to get a fair few complaints but the banks should ask why they are getting these complaints and try to iron out the problems.”
