MPs blast social care system

The health committee is calling for reform of the social care system in England after its latest report says the current system is underfunded, discriminatory and severely rationed.

Following the release of its Parliamentary report today, the committee says political parties should come together to map out sustainable reform, rather than “indulging in pre-election politicking”.

The report says the current social care system is chronically underfunded, severely rationed, discriminates against older people and too often of poor quality.

It also criticises the Government’s Free Personal Care at Home Bill which it says is underfunded and risks creating perverse incentives.

The committee is also urging debate on Government’s decision to rule out the option of free care funded from taxation. It also recommends raising the capital thresholds in the means test.

Committee chairman Kevin Barron says: “We don’t want this issue to be turned into an election football for it to be kicked back into the long grass again in a few weeks.”
