Tories boycott conference to discuss care costs

The Conservatives are refusing to take part in a conference about the funding of social care for the elderly.
According to the BBC, Labour and the LibDems will join care providers and charities to discuss care service costs, the proposed national care service and other options set out by Government in a Green Paper on how the means-tested system could be overhauled.
However, the Tories are not attending, says the report. The party’s decision comes after Shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley said he would only attend a meeting if Labour scrapped any plans for a 10 per cent levy on death to fund long-term care.
Speaking on GMTV this morning, Health Secretary Andy Burnham said the issue of funding long-term care is an issue “to big” for one party to deal with.
Yesterday the Audit Commission issued a wake-up call to councils, warning that if care costs increase in line with the ageing population, they could almost double by 2026.
