HMRC issues YouTube warning to offshore tax dodgers

HM Revenue & Customs has launched a hard-hitting YouTube video to encourage offshore tax dodgers to come clean or face the consequences.

In the two-minute video, HMRC permanent secretary for tax Dave Hartnett  warns those with undeclared offshore bank accounts who do not come forward under the government’s new disclosure opportunity that they will face much higher penalties and even criminal prosecution.

He says: “For some people, offshore bank accounts and tax havens typically conjure up images of exotic and far away places, well out of the reach of the taxman at home. Well, life’s just not like that any more. And here’s a blunt message from HM Revenue & Customs: times have changed. The taxman now has more powers and more information.”

Hartnett issues a last-chance reminder of the November 30 notification deadline and warns that those planning to ignore the opportunity are “burying their head in the sand.”

The video is available to view now by visiting the YouTube website at www.youtube.com and searching for “HMRC NDO”.
