Nationwide looks to scrap England sponsorship

Nationwide Building Society is planning to ditch its £20m sponsorship of the England football team.

A spokesman for the building society confirms that it does not intend to renew its contract after 11 years sponsoring the team.

The sponsorship is set to expire next month.

A Nationwide spokesman says: “Nationwide’s sponsorship of the England team has been extremely
successful over 11 seasons and has significantly raised the profile of our organisation.

“Our current sponsorship deal ends at the end of July and it is unlikely to be renewed.”

  • Sponsor Wales instead - at least you'll get some passion and a performance to be proud of. Better than those overpaid, arrogant, self-centred morons. Maybe the English players could now work for a bank!

  • The Algeria game was poor but the way the Germans destroyed many peoples' favourites Argentina on saturday puts England's performance against them in a different light. at least we scored two goals against them.
for the past 10-15 years we've been in the lower reaches of the world's top ten, hence the record of losing in quarter finals of major tournaments. this time round we got through the group stages and lost when we met a top 5 nation, pretty much par for the course. if we'd have scored another goal and won the group we'd probably have stumbled past Ghana and uruguay until we got stuffed by Holland in the semis and they'd have come heroes. we'd still only be about the 10th best team in the world though.

  • Maybe the FSA could step in and sponsor England, equally as feckless and unable to do the job they are paid a fortune to do!

  • Good, maybe the Nationwide will now sponsor its savers by giving then extra interest on their money!

  • Hopefully for England, this is the sponsorship equivalent of selling at the bottom of the market.
