Towergate Financial chief executive Ian Darby has stepped down after three years in the role to return to John Charcol as a non-executive chairman.

Towergate chief operating officer Dan Saulter has been appointed as new chief executive.

Darby was managing director at John Charcol for 16 years from February 1984 to February 2000, before leaving to join Bradford & Bingley as group commercial director. He returned to John Charcol as chairman in August 2005 before leaving again in November 2007.

Between February 2006 and September 2008, he was a non-executive director of Sesame Services and became Towergate Financial chief executive in October 2008.

Towergate Financial bought John Charcol out of administration in February 2010. The brokerage had liabilities of more than £3.7m when it went into liquidation earlier that month.

Darby says: “When Towergate Financial joined the Towergate Group in 2009, I was determined to lead the business back into profitability following a tough period of trading during an uncertain economic climate.

“Having reached this milestone, it was always my intention that I would hand over the reins of the business which is in great shape, with a strong new business pipeline and led by a first-class management team.”

Emba group sales and marketing director Mike Fitzgerald says: “Ian has so much experience at John Charcol so he will be a good asset.”
