Argos will refer site leads to IFAs

Argos will put users of its new price comparison site enquiring about mortgages or pensions in touch with one of 5,000 brokers or IFAs.

ArgosCompare.co.uk started operations last week and provides quotes on financial products including mortgages, pensions, annuities and insurance. It is a white-labelled version of existing website BeatThatQuote.com.

Argos Financial Services managing director Greg Ball says: “Argos has always been focused on providing choice, convenience and value to our customers, and the launch of Argos Compare is another example of us delivering that.”

Informed Choice joint managing director Martin Bamford says: “I am not sure that it adds anything new to the market. It is another lead generation site.

“It would probably be a good idea for the FSA to take a look at comparison sites. They do have the potential to be quite detrimental to consumers who do not understand their limitations.”

Tonic Marketing Solutions managing director Jeff Knight says he tested out the site with a range of different postcodes but each time the same broker’s name was returned.

He says: “This could just be a quirk with the cookies or something more sinister.”

ArgosCompare.co.uk declined to comment on Knight’s findings.
