Argos to provide mortgage leads to 4,000 brokers

Argos will put users of its new price comparison site in touch with one of 4,000 mortgage brokers.

ArgosCompare.co.uk went live today, and provides quotes on financial products including mortgages, pensions, annuities and insurance.

The site will be advertised on the retailer’s main website, which Argos says gives it an advantage over pure price comparison sites which have to pay for advertising.

Argos Financial Services managing director Greg Ball says: “Argos has always been focused on providing choice, convenience and value to our customers, and the launch of Argos Compare is another example of us delivering that.”

  • Does this mean if I decide I don't like the mortgage I can take it back within 2 weeks and get my money back?

  • Just took a quick look at the pensions offering on the Argos Compare site and, predictably, it's an absolute disgrace. Cheap, shabby, lead flogging is all that can be found on that part of the site - so much for 'choice, convenience and value to our customers' all you get is punted off to an IFA who will phone at a later date. Incidentally, I looked at the IFA's website and it's one of the most grotesque sites I've ever seen. As for the proposition (if you can get through the appalling copywriting) it's so spectacularly bad that you have to pinch yourself to check that you're not trapped in a pensions nightmare.

It feels to me like it's time for the regulator to take a good long look at comparison sites and the role of lead aggregators like Argos.
