Product comparison websites spark rise of the DIY researcher
Fair Investment Company investment administration manager Julie Smith believes structured product providers may become less dependent on sales through the intermediary channel.
At the Money Marketing round table, she said investors are increasingly researching products themselves.
She said: “At the moment, we do not give advice but we put a lot of information about different products on our website.
“More people are trying to do their own research as comparison websites become increasingly available. If the information is out there, you might find there is a shift.”
Helm Godfrey managing director Bruce Wilson said: “All the research shows most people would rather talk to their dad, mum or sister than an IFA. They are trying to do it ourselves and it is horrendous.”
Investec head of intermediary sales for derivatives and structured products Gary Dale said: “In the last couple of years, a number of IFAs have seen that asset allocation and diversification has not worked because markets have exploded in all the wrong ways and at all the wrong times.
That is a symptom of markets and an adviser could be absolved if the advice process is right.”
