FTSE Live: FTSE 100 makes early gains

1.29: The FTSE 100 has held on to early gains with the blue-chip index up 0.5 per cent. The French Cac 40 and the German Dax are both up 0.7 per cent.

9:15: The FTSE 100 has risen slightly in early trades this morning with miners and oil companies leading the way for the blue-chip index.

The index had risen by 0.5 per cent to stand at 5347.56 with Amec, Essar Energy and Petrofac Ltd rising the most in early trades.

The news followed a positive day of trading for Asian markets with the Nikkei 225 up almost 1.4 per cent and the Hang Seng up almost 3.3 per cent.

Other European markets were also positive with the Cac 40 up 0.7 per cent and the Dax up 1.1 per cent.
