FTSE 100 closes up for the day after regaining early losses

16:45: The FTSE 100 closes up 0.23 per cent at 5,053 after recovering from early losses which saw it fall below the 5,000 barrier.
15.54: The FTSE 100 has risen above 5,000 but still remains down by 0.2 per cent from opening.
14.07: The FTSE 100 has fallen 1.1 per cent to breach the 5,000 barrier.
The blue-chip index currently stands at 4984.98. While the Dax and the Cac 40 have also fallen by the best part of 2 per cent.
11.49: The FTSE 100 has fallen below 5,000 quickly erasing the small gains made in early trades on Friday.
The blue-chip index currently stands at 4975.66, a fall of 1.3 per cent from opening. The Dax and the Cac 40 are down 2.06 and 1.74 per cent respectively. Markets across Europe fell 5 per cent on Thursday.
Asian stocks continued their slide overnight as the poor economic news in the US was coupled with weak economic data out of China.
The South Korean Kospi index fell 5.7 per cent, while Taiwan and Hong Kong’s main indexes fell 3.6 and 2 per cent respectively. Australia’s ASX fell 1.6 per cent. The Nikkei in Japan is closed for a national holiday.
In the US, the Dow Jones ended Thursday down 3.51 per cent to stand at 10733.83.
9.25: The FTSE 100 has risen by 0.5 per cent in early trades to stand at 5069.75.
The Dax and Cac 40 have also made small gains following falls of 5 per cent on Thursday across Europe.
8.57: The FTSE 100 has held its ground in early trades after falling almost 5 per cent yesterday.
At 8.57am, the blue-chip index stood at 5094.18, having opened at 5041.61. The Dax and the Cac 40 also saw a nominal increase following yesterday’s heavy sell-off.
