Bogus callers claiming to be from FSCS trying to con Lifemark victims

A member of the Keydata Victims Group is warning Lifemark investors not to give out their bank details to bogus callers claiming to be from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

In a message on the group’s forum, Peter Hilton says a number of Lifemark investors have received calls.

He says: “Do not ever provide such details over the telephone. I am absolutely sure the FSCS would not ask for that sort of sensitive information.

“Your compensation will come in a letter and the letter will include a personal cheque. They do not send out money by direct transfer so do not give your bank account details over the phone to anybody you do not know.”

An FSCS spokeswoman says consumers should be on guard for bogus callers or people emailing them claiming to be from the FSCS.

She says: “People should not provide any information about their bank accounts or other personal information in response to these calls or emails. The FSCS will not cold-call you and ask for your bank details. If anyone does ring you and ask for this information, please report it to the police or the FSA’s helpline on 0845 606 1234.”

Informed Choice managing director Martin Bamford says: “We are seeing criminals increasingly taking advantage of topical events to exploit victims, so people must be vigilant to protect themselves.”
