IFP sets up ETF workshop for certified planners

The Institute of Financial Planning is hosting an exchange traded fund workshop for certified financial planners.

The day-long seminar, to be held in Glasgow on March 25, aims to provide the information for CFPs to make decisions about the use of ETFs in client portfolios.

It will cover how to raise ETFs with clients as an investment option, distinguish between the different kinds of ETFs and explain the merits and defects of ETFs compared with other investment structures such as Oeics.

It will also help advisers choose and arrange ETFs for clients and conduct ETF business profitably for clients and for advice firms.

IFP chief executive Nick Cann says the workshop will involve active participation, discussion and debate among attendees.

He says: “Active fund management is under scrutiny. With total expense ratios providing a drag on investment returns and the failure of many active managers to outperform benchmark indices, more and more planners are turning to ETFs as a more cost-effective way of gaining exposure to different asset classes and markets for their clients’ portfolios.

“The RDR requires that all financial planners have sound knowledge of these increasingly popular securities. So, whether you use them or not, this is the ideal chance to get your ETF structured CPD in a way that is specifically designed for the your needs as a CFP professional.”
