Gummer is stepping down as MP to focus on climate change

Association of Independent Financial Advisers chairman John Gummer is expected to step down as Tory MP for Suffolk Coast at the next general election to focus on the campaign against climate change.
According to press reports, the Conservative ex-Cabinet minister made his decision following the “disappointing” outcome of the climate change summit in Copenhagen.
Gummer has been MP for Suffolk Coast since 1979. He was a Cabinet minister under Margaret Thatcher and John Major’s Governments, serving as minister of agriculture, fisheries and food and then as Secretary of State for the Environment.
He was the UK Environmental Secretary from 1993 to 1997, where he played a key role in the Convention on Climate Change meetings in Berlin and Geneva.
Aifa says there is no requirement for the Aifa chairman to be a member of parliament.
Gummer’s term as chairman runs until November and Aifa says there is every chance that he will run until that date and may continue on if he is re-elected to chair the trade body.
Gummer was unavailable for comment.
